Transform your health with Joshua Hodnett

What is Coaching?

Most people don't seek out a coaching process because they lack information. They already understand that they should exercise more, eat with intention, sleep better, manage stress, or establish healthier boundaries. Many have read books, listened to podcasts, or tried numerous programs. Yet, despite knowing what to do, they find themselves reverting to familiar patterns.

If you've ever pondered, "Why do I keep doing what I know isn't serving me?" you're not alone. The gap between knowing and doing usually isn't due to a lack of knowledge; it's often a human problem. This gap is influenced by stress, habits, competing priorities, limiting beliefs, emotional patterns, and the straightforward truth that change is challenging.

This is where a health and wellness coach can make a significant difference. Instead of presenting just another set of rules or a rigid plan to follow, coaching creates an environment for deeper self-understanding. It helps you unearth what truly matters, identify obstacles, and pursue lasting change in a way that aligns with your values, strengths, and the life you aim to create. So, what is coaching? It’s not merely a directive; it’s a transformative journey to bridge the gap between knowledge and action.

Health and Wellness Coaching with Joshua Hodnett

Most conversations in our lives involve giving advice, solving problems, or convincing someone of the right answer. However, what is coaching, especially in the context of health and wellness? Coaching is distinct from these typical interactions.

As a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach, my role isn't to dictate how you should live your life. Instead, I facilitate a coaching process that encourages you to think more clearly, reconnect with your own wisdom, and discover solutions tailored to your unique life circumstances.

This doesn't imply that I never share knowledge or resources. My background in health, behavior change, mindfulness, and lifestyle medicine certainly informs our collaborative efforts. Yet, it's important to recognize that expertise alone rarely transforms lives. Lasting change occurs when new information is integrated with your personal experiences, values, and readiness to embrace change.

I provide the coaching process; you bring your life. Together, we forge a partnership that nurtures meaningful and sustainable growth.

MORE ON COACHING

Woman named Katherine H. gives a testimonial about coaching.

Strong, Not Wrong

It's easy to believe that personal growth begins with identifying everything that's wrong with us. Many of us have spent years criticizing ourselves and focusing on weaknesses, thinking that if we could just fix one more flaw, we'd finally feel enough. However, my coaching process takes a different approach. As a health and wellness coach, I emphasize that while we won't ignore your challenges, we also won't let them define you. We will dedicate equal time to discovering your strengths, values, successes, resilience, and existing capacities, alongside exploring obstacles. Research consistently shows that lasting change is more likely when we build upon what's already working rather than focusing exclusively on what's broken. One of my favorite questions during the coaching process is simple: What's strong here that we've forgotten to notice? That single shift often changes the entire conversation.

The Power of Open Questions

If you've never experienced the coaching process before, one thing you'll notice is that I ask a lot of questions. Not because I don't have answers, but rather because your own discoveries are far more powerful than any advice I could give as your health and wellness coach. Open-ended questions invite curiosity instead of judgment. They help uncover patterns, clarify values, challenge assumptions, and reveal possibilities that may have been hidden in plain sight. This approach slows us down enough to notice what we've been rushing past for years. Sometimes, the most meaningful moments in coaching aren't when someone shares something profound; they're those quiet moments after a thoughtful question, when something inside begins to shift. This is what coaching is truly about.

Motivation Comes From Within

People often assume that coaches, such as a health and wellness coach, simply motivate their clients. In reality, understanding what is coaching reveals that lasting motivation can't be given to someone else. While external pressure may produce short-term action, sustainable change grows from internal commitment. This principle is central to the coaching process known as Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based approach that recognizes individuals are far more likely to follow through on changes they choose for themselves. Instead of persuading you to change, we’ll explore your own reasons for change. We’ll identify what matters most to you, examine any ambivalence with compassion rather than judgment, and strengthen your confidence by building on your previous successes. The goal isn’t for you to adopt my priorities; it’s for you to live more fully into your own.

Appreciative Inquiry: Expanding What's Already Alive

Another important influence on my coaching process is Appreciative Inquiry, which starts with a simple but transformative assumption: every individual already has strengths worth building upon. Rather than solely asking, 'What's wrong?' Appreciative Inquiry also inquires, 'When have you been at your best?' and 'What elements were present during those moments that we can cultivate more intentionally?' This approach doesn't dismiss pain or difficulty; it acknowledges that growth is often accelerated by expanding upon what already provides us energy, meaning, confidence, and vitality. For a health and wellness coach, understanding that the path forward may not always be about fixing what's lacking, but rather remembering and leveraging what's already present, is essential in what is coaching.

Whole-Person Wellness

Many people initially seek the coaching process because they want to lose weight, improve their health, reduce stress, or feel more energized. These are important goals, and as a health and wellness coach, I understand that we may spend considerable time working toward them.

Yet health and wellness don't exist in isolation.

Your relationships influence your stress levels. Your work impacts your sleep quality. Your beliefs shape your habits. Your sense of purpose drives your motivation. Everything is interconnected.

Because of that, our conversations may delve into movement, nutrition, recovery, emotional well-being, relationships, boundaries, identity, purpose, and the daily choices that shape your quality of life. Together, we'll explore the whole picture, not just one piece of it, as we navigate what is coaching in a holistic manner.
